11/12/09 T-623 days registering for a trek date

This is the copy of my application for a trek date. As it turned out this one didn't make it, but Jims did. Another thing is there are often cancellations and they the word out. The only disadvantage is you don't get a choice of date.

Hi Jim,
I didn't get to this until about 9 pm.  I noticed your dates were 2010 dates (at least as they aligned with Sat/Sun arrivals).  I kept to the same general pattern, but used 2011 dates as noted below.

Also, 1st available in Jun doesn't work for me as school will be out early June and I didn't want to get hung up.  However, I did follow on with a few Sat/Sun Jun dates later in the month.

Hope I wasn't wrong on the date thing.  Let me know.

Loren

11/10/09. T-625 days

Hi Loren,

Well I went on to the Philmont site http://philmontreservations.wslive.com/2011 and stepped through the registration process.  The date selections were different than I was expecting based on the registration request worksheet I filled out.  So, I selected 5 priority dates (see enclosed .pdf) these I picked so that the treks would be in the middle of the “season” and travel to Philmont would occur on a weekend and the crews would return before the 3rd weekend out.  After that I selected the first available date for a 12 day trek in June, July or August (again see the enclosed .pdf).  This second selection, if none of the priority dates were available, seemed to be the best way to cover all available Expedition dates.  I didn’t submit this request yet to see if you had any comment or suggestion for changes.  I will want to send the request soon.  Let me know what you think.

I’m not sure if I can make the Troop meeting tonight.  If I can I’ll stop by with a copy of the enclosed Registration Request Confirmation so we might discuss it.

YIS,

Jim

2011 Philmont Trek

I have received the initial information to apply for a Philmont Trek for the 2011 season.  The application process is randomized and does not guarantee a trek, although we have been successful for the last few years.

For those of you who are not aware of Philmont, it is the National Boy Scout Ranch located in Northern New Mexico.  Philmont provides the most enjoyable and challenging long-term backpacking experience available to Scouts.  It is definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity for all who attend.  If you are interested in going to Philmont, please email me to indicate your interest.  This will be used to determine if we have enough interest to field a trek crew of 12 participants.  This will not at this time commit you to a trek.  It is also not a guarantee that you will qualify for a trek.  Qualification criteria are currently being worked on.  If you are a Venture Crew member, do not indicate interest to both Mr. Meyer and myself (he is trying for a Venture trek crew).  Please note that Philmont limits the number of adults to no more than 4 per crew.    The minimum crew size is seven total.  We must take a minimum of 2 adults.  Adults may lose a spot on the crew if they fail to qualify or if they are the third/forth adult and a ninth or tenth scout wishes to attend.  Qualification and certification of adults will be by independent adult committee.

Boys must be 14 years of age at time of trek or 13 and graduated from 8th grade.  They should be in reasonable health and will need to have a current Philmont health form (hopefully the new BSA form).  They must also conform to weight minimums and maximums.  They must be First Class rank minimum.

The base cost of the Philmont trek in 2011 is $725.  Cost for transportation (location is in New Mexico) is extra.  By train (lowest cost), the cost last year was about $350.  This did not include food and incidental expenses during the trip.  There will also be at least 3 training hikes that will be accounted for separately, but all or some may be required to attend Philmont.

So if all that sounds appealing to you, please respond to me no later than Nov. 10, 2009.

This is also the site at which you will make your "bid" for a trek.

Chapter One - I like to hike

I am starting this blog at the request of Tim Roach, one of our stalwart ASMs in BSA Troop 761 from Thousand Oaks, CA. The intent is to record our preparation for a Philmont trek in July 2011. This will be my third trip to Philmont, second as lead crew advisor. Most of what I will post is based on information developed by several of my fellow leaders including Larry Tuck and Jim Meyer. I hope this situation will suffice to recognize their contributions....but if not, I hope they will regard it as the sincerest form of flattery!
